AFRICAN MISSION OF CHAD-CAMEROON

Chad-Cameroon Mission is one of the youngest missions of the Fransalians. The first team of three Fransalians from India arrived in Chad on 12th November 1999 and one year later in Cameroon on 19th November 2000. Today we have four communities: at Bero in Chad, at Ngaoundere in North Cameroon,  at Nkolbisson, Yaounde in Cameroon and at Ekoundoum, Younde in Cameroon.

THE FOUNDER'S DREAM

Père Pierre-Marie MERMIER (1790-1862)

Founder of the Missionaries of Saint Francis de Sales

Father Mermier was captivated by the idea of going himself to the West African Mission as early as in 1842. The founder expressed his desire to go to the Mission of Liberia in response to a request from Rome to the diocese of Annecy to take up a mission in Africa. In the same year during a visit to Rome Fr. Mermier met Msgr. Baron, the Vicar Apostolic of the newly created Vicariate of the Two Guineas and once again expressed his readiness to go to the West African Mission. It was on 2 January 1842 that Rome created the Apostolic Prefecture of the Two Guineas with its headquarters at Libreville in Gabon. The territory of the present Cameroon was part of this prefecture. On 3 October 1842 the prefecture became the Apostolic Vicariate of the Two Guineas. The new Vicariate extended over the whole of the west coast of Africa from Liberia in the north to the Orange river in the south. Fr. Mermier's request to go to West Africa was turned down by Rome. Instead he was asked to send his missionaries to the Visakhapatnam Mission in India. Today, after a lapse of 160 years the dream of the Founder has come true when the first team of Fransalians from India arrived in Chad-Cameroon in 1999-2000.

CHAD Mission Now & in Future CAMEROON Mission
The Cha- mission in West-Central Africa began in 1999.  In 1996 the General council decided to accept the invitation of Msgr. Michel Russo, Bishop of Doba in Chad and asked the South West province to pioneer the new mission in Doba.  Thus the pioneering team of Frs. Antony Mookenthottam, Thomas Payattukandathil and Jose Puthiaparambil arrived in Doba in November 1999.
